Crimson Rising by Jeff Edwards

A soaring eagle is depicted, hand carved in B.C. Snowflake Marble.

About the Artist:

Jeff Edwards grew up in Ucluelet as a member of a large fishing family. Besides following his passion in carving, he is a commercial fisherman from a long line of fisherman on his father’s side stretching to the opposite coast of Canada; Newfoundland. He started carving native species of wood from an early age “as if it was part of me” he says. He was inspired to start sculpting in marble by the beauty of the local Clayoquot Sound marble deposits.

Between a busy life as a father and a commercial fisherman, he sporadically finds time to pursue his artistic passion. Eventually turning to stone from wood, he has sold hundreds of pieces now scattered around the world. His subjects are of animals and marine life that have surrounded him since he was a child. Each sculpture starts with Jeff trekking around the mountainside to find a stream run boulder to suit the subject and bringing it back to his studio. No piece is ever identical in colour or pattern for this reason. He finishes each sculpture  to perfection and hand polishes to a natural hard lustre.

Of himself he says: “If there has been a spiritual journey in my life it has been an increasing feeling of humility in the face of a greater awareness of the complexity and perfection of life. The aerial acrobatics of an eagle or amazing swimming abilities of a sea lion leave me in awe. So many creatures coexist so perfectly with nature that mankind seems irrelevant and clumsy except for their negative impact on that web”.
